| COMPOSER DAVID SAPERSTEIN was born in Brooklyn and grew up on Long Island and New Jersey. His first musical studies were at home with his father. David's first formal studies in Musical Composition were with Jacob Druckman at the Juilliard Pre-College Division. David continued his studies at Princeton University, as a student of Milton Babbitt, and then at Brandeis University, where he earned an M.F.A. and was a student of Martin Boykan. An award winner at an early age, David was one of the youngest winners of the BMI Awards to Student Composers, and is a nine-time winner of the ASCAPlus Award. He was awarded a Fulbright Fellowship in Musical Composition and was an Associate Fellow at the Berkshire Music Center at Tanglewood. A former member of the music faculty at Brooklyn College, Mr. Saperstein’s music has been heard live in the United States as well as abroad, with performances taking place at such venues as Alice Tully Hall, Town Hall, Symphony Space and the Weill Recital Hall at Carnegie Hall in New York City, the American Academy and Villa La Pariola (the American Ambassador’s Residence) in Rome, Villa Schifanoia in Florence, the Arnold Schoenberg Institute in Los Angeles, the Cummings Center at Connecticut College, and at many colleges, conservatories, concert halls, houses of worship, and at many other venues throughout the country as well as abroad. Recorded performances of Mr. Saperstein's music have been broadcast around the world. The performers who have played Mr. Saperstein’s music include: the New Jersey Percussion Ensemble, the New Jersey New Music Ensemble, and the William Paterson Percussion Ensemble, under the direction of Peter Jarvis, Payton MacDonald, Raymond Des Roches, Gary Van Dyke and John Ferrari; the Purchase Percussion Ensemble, under the direction of Dominic Donato; Speculum Musicae, the Group for Contemporary Music, the Composers Guild of New Jersey, and Composers Concordance.
On January 29, 2012, Mr. Saperstein participated in the 3rd Annual Composers Play Composers Marathon which took place at DROM, an East Village nightspot, premiering Trio (2011) with GENE PRITSKER and PETER JARVIS.

PETER JARVIS has played a key role in Mr. Saperstein's music. David's Timpani Solo II, composed in 2006, is dedicated to Mr. Jarvis, and is published, as part of a collection of ten timpani solos, entitled A Twenty-First Century Timpani Anthology, engraved and edited by Mr. Jarvis, and is available from Calabrese Brothers Music. Mr. Saperstein's Drum Set Solo, composed in 2008, is part of another collection of solos engraved and edited by Peter Jarvis, and published by Calabrese Brothers Music, entitled Drumset Music for the Concert Stage - Volume I. Works by Mr. Saperstein, many of which have been written for Mr. Jarvis and published by Calabrese Brothers, are: Percussion Quintet (1996), From the River Within (2007), Sonata for Solo Percussion (1999), Vibraphone Solo (2000), Vibraphone Solo II (2009), Snare Drum Solo (2009), Flute Solo (Romeo and Juliet) (2009), Aria II for Solo Clarinet (2009) and Remembering Dr. King (1994). PAYTON MACDONALD commissioned Mr. Saperstein's Three Marimba Solos (2009), and premiered the work at William Paterson University on November 30, 2009. Mr. MacDonald subsequently performed the work at the New Jersey Music Educators Conference, on February 19, 2010; at William Paterson on March 25, 2010; and at the Eastman School, in Rochester, on March 28, 2010. JEFFREY KRESKY has been a long-time associate of Mr. Saperstein. In 2008, Mr. Saperstein was named Composer in Residence at William Paterson University for Composer in Residence Day XI. A mid-day program of Mr. Saperstein's works was presented at the Shea Center for the Performing Arts at William Paterson University by the New Jersey Percussion Ensemble and the New Jersey New Music Ensemble, all under the direction of Peter Jarvis. As an integral part of the program, Mr. Kresky performed Mr. Saperstein's Etudes I and II for Piano, and led a panel discussion following the concert. GARY BUTTERY gave the world premiere of Mr. Saperstein's Tuba Solo (2010) on a Percussion and New Music Ensemble concert at Evans Hall, Connecticut College, New London, Connecticut, on Thursday evening, May 13, 2010. ZACHARY NAYER recently performed Mr. Saperstein's Duo for Vibraphone and Piano at the SUNY Purchase Conservatory of Music. David is in collaboration with playwright Robert Christman. Mr. Saperstein has composed Daddy's Waltz and Numerian Overture as pieces of incidental music for two of Mr. Christman's plays. David is also involved in the production of mixed media. He has created music videos for Jeffrey Kresky's performance of Milton Babbit's For One Instrument and Ben, Peter Jarvis' performances of Terry Riley's In C, Milton Babbitt's Homily, Kung Chi Shing's Fishdream, and his own Vibraphone Solo II (2009).
